On we went toward Atlanta, with stopovers at Lafayette, Indiana to see the tiny bank building designed by Louis Sullivan, who Frank Lloyd Wright worked with when he was 21 years old. The little bank was well done, and even though it was extremely small (probably much less than 1000 sq. ft.), it was nicely detailed. Done in the twilight of Sullivan's life before 1920, still well done.

Then we stopped in Columbus, Indiana, a small town with some notable architecture. Namely, Saarenin's (sp.) "oil can" church there. They were working on the steeple, which hurt the exterior pictures, but we were able to get inside. I was expecting a soaring interior similar to the exterior, with skylights at the top and much light. Instead, it was dark and a disappointment inside. Too bad: from the exterior it looked like a fine building. But, as Frank Lloyd Wright said many times, "the reality of a building is the space within to be lived in..." And so my trip to Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin North was over, as we rolled back into Atlanta.
